Pomes Penyeach-Ballet Met. Columbus

Ballet Met

“Ballet Met presented last night at the Ohio Theater Domy Reiter-Soffer's “Pomes Penyeach” inspired by the pomes of the same name by James Joyce. Reiter-Soffer took 19 poems, choreographed brief and strong movement accompanied the dance with poems read by the famous Irish actor John Kavanagh and Music by Joyce's contemporary composers Ravel, Satie, Debussy and Franck. The result is powerful, sometimes humorous, often tragic dance that paralleled Joyce's sad Life.
“Pomes Penyeach” is filled with imaginative choreography and it was beautifully performed by the company with sparkling technical feats especially by Jeffrey Smith as the Joyce figure and Susan Perry who gave both comedy and drama and showed what a wonderful dancer she really is.
Pomes Penyeach” looked well rehearsed with particular highlights. In the humorous
“Who goes amid the green wood” and the haunting “A Memory of the Players in a Mirror at Midnight” while Mr. Smith was most effective throughout and especially memorable as the anguished poet in “A Prayer” and the concluding part “Requiem” to music of Bach.
This is the sort of ballet that offers a lot to absorb. In turn, it is an absorbing dance full of invention and drama performed with such expertise that one hope Ballet Met offers it again soon”.
