Summer Nights-San Francisco contemporary Dance Theater

San Francisco Moving Company in Herbst Theater. "The major work of the evening, a commissioned premiere by Domy Reiter Soffer, "Les Nuits De'te', is a highly serviceable work that makes the company look splendid and completely different than the rest of the programme. Reiter Soffer look like a herald of boldness and romanticism in the dance world. In retrospect, Reiter Soffer's piece, basically a five-part essay on facets of love set to five of Berlioz's six vocal portraits by the same title. Les Nuits De'te' starts in silence with the dancers moving in restless patterns as the curtain rises. There are three couples Jim Campbell, partners a rose. A few moments later Tina Misaka enters wearing a red dress and it is apparent that she is the rose in the song, 'Le Spectre de la Rose'. As Reiter Soffer offers another look at this well known song. This first section ends with nicely framed design as the two couples role quietly of the stage and Campbell arches achingly upwards, the rose in his hand. Throughout his dance, Reiter Soffer gives the performers steps that demands a technique so highly refined that can shift instantly from abandon to meticulous control. Although the dancers performed glowingly, there were times when the moving company dances lost the rushing momentum of Reiter Soffer's choreography. In the dance's subsequent sections especially "Villanelle' and L'isle inconnu' the performers generated a steady rush of emotion of spiraling torsos, paddling arms and flickering feet. Splashing his movement across the stage like great washes of color. Reiter Soffer offers a rush of impressions out of which the viewer shapes his own dance. The dancers danced with enthusiasm and grace and looked splendid in "Les Nuits De'te' ".

"The Moving Company at the Herbst Theater danced Domy Reiter Soffer's "Les Nuits De'te' " which received its world premiere last night to an enthusiastic audience. Based on Berlioz song cycle to Gautier poems, the ballet is romantic and full of surprises. Like his ballet "Equus" danced by Dance Theater of Harlem Last year Les Nuits De'te' is a full of dramatic elements and sensuality. The women exhibit crispness but not much way of sensuality. The ballet though shows the company in a ray of technical feats demanding from the male dancers utmost discipline and strong lyrical moves. Les Nuits D e'te' is a welcomed addition to a company that most of its repertoire lacks real dramatic substance".
